I got all of them right except for No. 8, as the sentence looked wrong to me. Who says, “This kind of apples is my favorite.”? Shouldn’t it be “This kind of apple [i.e, singular] is my favorite”, even if one is pointing at a whole peck of similar apples, because the object is the apple variety, not the apples as individual things? If the peck were a mix of apple varieties, then wouldn’t it be “These kinds of apples are my favorites”?

Sorry. It has been fixed, but that was muy fault – using the incorrect verb made the question not make much sense. I was getting at people saying These kind of apples instead of These kinds of apples, and of course the verb (are) should agree with the subject, kinds.

Hi Arlene. Love your quizzes. #10 got me!

It would have gotten me as well; I never use either of those words!

YAY!!! (Sorry, I know about the triple exclamation points.) But I finally managed to get them all correct. I confess, however, that “venial” threw me. Pun intended. The last one of these I did I couldn’t believe I’d gotten one wrong. A word I knew! Headscratches ensued. I raced through it. Sounds like a sufficent excuse. Okay, so even my eyes are rolling. It’s a sorry one. Nevertheless, I knew what the word “venal” meant, but “venial” is one I rarely use. Which makes it suspect–and, in this case, the right word for the sentence. Which it was. I keep a fairly thorough APP on my computer called the Advanced Enlish Dictionary (or the AED). The thing is a lifesaver for authors, especially for those who are writing a novel set in the 14th century. But I digress. I happened to know that “toward” is most commonly used in the U.S. but that “towards” is still correct, especially if you’re a British English speaker. However, I also happen to know that they find our version of the English language deplorable. Ah-h, me . . ..
Thanks for another terrific blog, Arlene. I can’t wait for next week!

“I’d ‘GOTTEN’.., I believe is wrong in itself “got” better, but anything with ‘got’ is tricky and often poor English;there are so many stronger, more accurate verbs to use there…!
Arlene Miller says
I don’t see the sentence you are referring to, but gotten is a correct past participle of get, and preferred in the United States.
